Creatures of Africa

Lions

Lions (panthera leo) are amazing creatures. They are known for being "King of The Wild", and are certainly very majestic animals! They live in groups called Prides, and are the only wild cat to live in such a group. Male lions are simply called lions, females are lionesses, and young are cubs. Lions are only found wild in Africa, apart from the extremely endangered remnant population in India. They usually live in savannah grasslands, but they can also be found in forests. Lions live to around 12 years in the wild, but in captivity they can live to be over 20.  Lions' coat colour ranges from white, to yellowish, beige, reddish, tawny, and brown. Males are famous for their majestic great shaggy mane. Lions spend a long time resting, and are inactive for about 20 hours a day. That makes them only active for four ours! It is the lionesses who do most of the hunting. Their prey mainly consists of antelope, warthog, zebras and wildebeest when lucky. The lionesses usually work together to encircle the herd from different positions.
When resting, lions sometimes communicate through head-nuzzling and social licking, rather like my pet cats.
